Life Insurance With an Investment Component Doesn’t Automatically Boost Returns

Investment life insurance increases returns only if the invested portion of the premium performs well. The policy itself does not guarantee returns. Money is invested in funds or other financial instruments, and their value can rise or fall.

This sentence is important for investment life insurance (IŽP). Returns do not arise simply because a product is called “investment.” They arise based on the investment’s performance after deducting costs. At the same time, part of the premium does not go into investment. It is used for insurance coverage and costs as specified in the contract.

When we record this as a basic note, our view on the question of investment tips also changes. IŽP is not regular saving. Nor is it pure investing. It is life insurance to which an investment component is attached.

With risk life insurance, a person pays for insurance protection. If a defined insured event occurs, the insurer may pay the agreed benefit. If the event does not occur, the premium does not appreciate on its own.

With investment life insurance, the premium has two roles. One part serves for insurance. The second part is invested. This invested sum can increase or decrease depending on fund performance. The result therefore depends on the market, the length of the insurance, the chosen investment option, and costs.

The most important sentence is: not the entire premium is invested. The National Bank of Slovakia warns that at the beginning of the contract, a large portion of the paid premium may go toward costs. Thus, only a smaller sum enters the investment. The exact share, however, depends on the specific contract.

It is precisely here that the meaning of the word “return” is often lost. Imagine that a fund achieves a positive valuation. That does not mean that the total sum paid to the insurer will grow by the same percentage. First, one must distinguish between the premium, the invested sum, the account value, and all costs listed in the contract.

Fund return and return of the entire contract are not the same numbers. A fund can grow, but the final value may be lower if it is reduced by fees and insurance costs. When comparing, therefore, it is not enough to look only at the fund’s historical results.

Historical results are also not a promise of the future. Markets change. The value of the investment can fall even during periods when the contract continues to be paid. With investment life insurance, therefore, there is a risk of loss, just as with other investments in instruments whose value changes.

Here it is worth pausing at the article title itself. The claim that investment life insurance increases returns can be true only in a narrower sense. The investment component can earn more than the sum put into it. However, it is incorrect to claim that every IŽP will increase the overall value of money or that such a result will always occur.

The length of the contract is also decisive. IŽP is often concluded for a longer period. In case of early termination, the account value may be lower than the sum of premiums paid. Reasons can include costs, the insurance part, and investment development. Specific rules, however, are determined by the relevant contract and its terms.

At this point, IŽP differs from general investing. With independent investing, the main focus is on choosing the instrument, risk, time, and costs. With IŽP, insurance protection and the rules of the insurance product are added. Therefore, it is not appropriate to compare only one percentage value.

Risk life insurance cannot be evaluated by the same measure as IŽP. Risk insurance has its main goal in protection against defined risks. IŽP combines protection with investing. Each product therefore addresses a different need and has a different cost structure.

When reading the contract, it makes sense to pay attention to several data points. It is important what portion of the premium goes toward investing, what funds are available, what risks they carry, and what costs are charged. The method of calculating the account value and the conditions upon contract termination are also significant.

These are not just technical details. These data explain why the return may be lower than the fund’s result advertised or stated in an information document. Without them, it is impossible to reasonably assess what investment life insurance actually delivers.

Even the word “increases” requires precision. Investing can increase the value of the invested portion compared to the amount put in. However, it can also bring a decline. Costs can further reduce the result. Therefore, with IŽP, one cannot speak of a certain increase in returns without knowing the specific contract and future market developments.

Our editorial note is simple: IŽP should be read as a combination of two services. One is life insurance. The other is investing. Return belongs to the second part, but its outcome is also influenced by the first part and the costs of the entire product.

The greatest room for error arises when the investment component is presented as safe saving. It is not. Safety, insurance coverage, and investment return are different things. A contract may contain insurance protection, but that does not mean a guarantee of growth in the invested value.

For the reader, therefore, the question “How is the final contract value generated?” is more useful than “What return does the product promise?” The answer is sought in the contract, in information about funds, in costs, and in risks. Not in the product name itself.

Investment life insurance can thus increase the value of the invested portion of the premium. However, it may not increase the overall return for every client. What matters is the development of the investment, the actual sum invested in funds, costs, and the time during which the contract lasts.

That is precisely why conversations with providers should be based on clear numbers and understandable conditions. Transparent Insurance supports this approach with practical explanations of life insurance and contractual questions that truly matter with IŽP.
